Financial Advisor for Widows in Salt Lake City | Mitch Simkins

Hi, I'm Mitch

Financial guidance for widows in
Salt Lake City

A wealth advisor twenty minutes south of downtown, with a practice built around widows

"You're navigating something no one prepares you for. I'm here to help you find your footing."

"I needed a guide"

In the valley, the first two weeks are crowded. Neighbors, family from out of state, people from work, people from church. Meals arrive. Someone mows the lawn.

Then it goes quiet, and the paperwork is still sitting on the counter exactly where it was. That quiet stretch, usually somewhere between week three and month three, is when most widows call me.

Nothing about that timing is late. It is just when the noise drops enough to hear the questions.

Hi, I'm Mitch

Holding finances steady while you find your footing

I work with widows at the exact intersection where grief and financial complexity meet, helping hold finances steady while you get your footing, where the stakes are too high for a generic approach.

I have been a wealth manager for 20 years and have worked with Salt Lake families for most of them. What pointed me toward widows was closer to home: my dad was six, in his father’s arms when he died, and my grandmother raised seven children after that.

She was capable and stubborn and largely on her own. Every widow I have worked with since has reminded me of her in some way, which is why I do this work rather than something more general.

How we work together

How the work goes in the valley

A simple path through what feels impossible. We move at your pace.

Getting your footing
1

Getting your footing

Income first. We confirm what is still arriving, what stopped, and which bills are tied to accounts that may freeze, so nothing lapses in the weeks you cannot be watching.

Getting organized
2

Getting organized

Then the inventory. Salt Lake households often have more moving parts than expected: an old 401(k), an HSA, RSUs from a tech or healthcare employer, a rental. We get it all on one page.

Creating a plan

Creating a plan

Then decisions, starting with the reversible ones, and working up to the house and the survivor benefit timing when you are ready to weigh them.

Why widows

Why widows, specifically

Grief and money arrive together, and the decisions made in that overlap tend to be permanent. Most of my value in the first year is in what we decline to decide.

Faith, family and service are how I was raised. Practically, that means you can reach me in a hard week, and I am still here later when the questions change shape.

Local detail

What Salt Lake widows are usually sorting out

The house question is louder here. A lot of valley households hold substantial equity in a home bought years ago, a retirement account, and not much in between. That combination makes the choice sharp: stay and be house-rich and cash-tight, or sell and free up income. There is no universal answer, and it is rarely a decision that has to be made in the first year.

Equity compensation shows up more than people expect. Between the tech corridor and the hospital systems, RSUs, options and deferred compensation are common in the valley. Each has its own rules after a death, and vesting schedules do not pause for grief. It is worth finding out what exists before a deadline finds you.

Getting here. The office is at 9980 S 300 W in Sandy, a straight shot down I-15, usually 20 to 25 minutes from downtown outside of rush hour. I meet widows from the Avenues, Sugar House, Holladay, Millcreek, Murray and Cottonwood Heights. If driving south is one thing too many this month, we meet by video.

Working with the people you already trust. I coordinate regularly with estate attorneys and CPAs around the valley. Farther does not provide legal or tax advice, so those professionals stay part of the picture rather than being replaced.

If you are earlier than that, the first 90 days is the better place to start, and the Utah page covers how I work more broadly.

Common questions

Questions Salt Lake widows ask me

Where do we meet?
At my office in Sandy, at 9980 S 300 W, Suite 105, just off I-15, or by video from home. Many Salt Lake City widows prefer video for the first conversation.

How far is the office from downtown?
About 20 to 25 minutes south on I-15 outside of rush hour.

Can you work with my attorney and CPA?
Yes, and I would prefer to. Farther does not provide legal or tax advice, so your attorney and CPA stay part of the picture.

Do I have to decide about the house?
Not on any schedule but your own. Most widows I work with are glad they waited until the rest of the picture was clear.

What does a first conversation look like?
A real conversation at your pace, with no agenda and no pressure. We look at where you are, sort what needs attention now from what can safely wait, and you decide what happens next.

A real conversation to help you find your footing, at your pace, on your own timeline.
